These dictionaries were primarily aimed at students and those learning English, showcasing the early emphasis on language education and standardization.

The Rise of Printed Dictionaries: Standardization Efforts

The invention of the printing press in the 15th century revolutionized the dissemination of knowledge, including the creation and distribution of dictionaries. Printed dictionaries allowed for wider circulation and greater consistency in spelling and definitions. The 17th century saw a significant increase in the publication of English dictionaries, driven by a growing desire to standardize the language and establish rules of grammar and usage. One of the most influential dictionaries of this period was Robert Cawdrey's A Table Alphabeticall (1604), considered the first monolingual English dictionary. John Bullokar's An English Expositor (1616) and Henry Cockeram's The English Dictionarie (1623) followed Cawdrey's lead, expanding the number of words included and providing more detailed definitions. These early dictionaries often included etymologies, explanations of word origins, reflecting a growing interest in the history and development of the English language. However, they also reflected the biases and preferences of their compilers, highlighting the subjective nature of lexicography.

Samuel Johnson's Landmark Achievement: A Dictionary of the English Language

The 18th century witnessed the publication of what is arguably the most important dictionary in the history of the English language: Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language (1755). Johnson's dictionary was a monumental achievement, representing years of painstaking work and meticulous scholarship. Unlike previous dictionaries, Johnson's work aimed to not only define words but also to illustrate their usage with quotations from reputable authors. This innovative approach provided readers with a richer understanding of the English language and its literary heritage.

Johnson's dictionary was not without its limitations. He famously defined
